W.E.A.N. Cooperatives — 100% Ethically Traded

Women Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal is a non-profit organization, funded by the Nepalese Government to help implement village-based sustainalbe, women-based trade programs.

Himalayan Tea and Coffee Co. works with the W.E.A.N. cooperative developing women-based and women-trained cooperatives throughout Central Nepal.

Their office is located near the capitol city of Kathmandu. I visited their entirely women-run staff last November of 2005. They were energetic about the skill levels of the Nepali women, their artistic crafts were well-made, colorful and functional. The women weavers are some of the most revered within their society. These women can weave intricate fashionable shawls, as well as our bamboo baskets. These baskets take the skilled hands of a Nepali village women only minutes to complete. The source of the bamboo comes from the village sustainalbe cultivation programs of grasses, including bamboo.

The quality, as seen in the strength and durability of our handwoven baskets from Nepal is amazing…to think it was just woven by the hands of a women in Jhapa, Ilam, Hile, Gorkha, Ashrang, Nibel Chhoprak or Laprak. These are some of the potentials that cooperative markets offer rural village development in Nepal.

Crooked Trails Organization, Promoting Cultural Education through Travel

This non-profit is both inspiring and electrifying. They are concerned for the trends in globalization that tend to exploit and objectify the countries we are curious about. The countries whose indigenous people hold beautiful ceremony to honor ancient traditions, that continue their cultural heritage through art, dance, reverence for the land with a tightly knit social fabric.

Crooked Trails caters to groups who care to give back on their journeys to foreign lands. Linking programs with indigenous people who often show us a “truer” picture of the country we are visiting. They teach us their language and how they are able to continue to walk in peace. They specialize travel programs with communities in Kenya, Nepal, India, Thailand, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile!
Crooked Trails President, Chris

Crooked Trails is helping coordinate a trip to visit Nepal with Himalayan Tea and Coffee Co. This trip is tentatively scheduled for January of 2008, but will show any interested botanists, plant lovers and trekkers the coffee farms while they are being harvested, indeginous women village programs where herbal collections take place as well as the wonderful vistas of the Himalayan range.
